Testosterone Information

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group. It is usually secreted from the testes of males in and also the ovaries of females. Testosterone can also be secreted from the adrenal glands, even though the amounts are very small.

Testosterone is very important in the day to day living of both males and females. It is the primary hormone that is responsible for sex drive as well as protection against certain conditions, such as osteoporosis. Both males and females produce this hormone, but the amount in the male body is far greater than that in a female’s body.

How is Testosterone Produced?

Naturally -  Testosterone is a steroid hormone and like others it is derived from cholesterol. The amount in a males body is generally produced in the testicles of men. It also is created in small quantities in a woman’s body by the ovaries, placenta and the thecal cells.

Artificially - Testosterone can be synthesized artificially. First, it can be esterified, permitting a long-lasting effect when injected into the body. Second, it can be alkylated, permitting oral intake instead of injection.
